Tech Adoption Up for Ag

Mar 8, 2024

ICYMI: The latest Ag Census is out. Good news – Bushel gave us their recap of agricultural demographics and trends.

Bushel (a software tech company that spends its days developing digital tools for the agriculture supply chain) released its annual State of the Farm Report. AKA – they summarize the opinions of the U.S. farmers on topics like grain marketing strategies, technology use and perceptions, and farming practices.

Big growth: Of the farmers in the 18-40 age group, 60% indicated that they have big plans for growing their operations. The young farmers surveyed think their biggest opportunities for growth lie within improving marketing strategies, tracking and improving field performances, and increasing operational efficiencies.

Tech talk:  The report summarized that farmers primarily rely on apps for weather and financial record-keeping. Additionally, young farmers in the 18-40 age group believe that software use can help increase profit and manage costs. 65% of respondents said they would even be willing to sell/buy grain through an app or website.

Psst – paper check payments are down, too. Over 70% of grain settlements are still being paid via paper checks, but they are trending down. Reported digital payment platform use is up 24%.

Wrap-up: The young guns are big fans of technology and are jumping in with big plans of using it to up the ante for the future of farming.
